Abstract

The article deals with the subtype of the same name of the alluvial-meadow-forest (Mollic Fluvisols) soil type formed in the floodplain along the Kur River. Although this subtype does not occupy a large area within the Kur River valley, it is distributed over a considerable distance from west to east under varying phytocenotic and intrazonal conditions.

The Kur River receives numerous tributaries from both the right and left banks in its middle course, resulting in changes in chemical, fractional and phytocenotic compositions of transported materials. These changes lead to both quantitative and qualitative transformations in physico-chemical and organic properties within the same soil subtype. Relief and parent rock play a crucial role in the formation of alluvial-meadow-forest soils.

A number of physico-chemical indicators, including the amount and reserves of total humus, have been analyzed and compared using soil monitoring data. In recent years, due to the reduction of the Kur River flow, waters of the Caspian Sea have penetrated into the delta, leading to transformations of ecosystems in adjacent areas.
