ECOLOGICAL PROBLEMS CAUSED BY THE CASPIAN SEA LEVEL FLUCTUATIONS IN COASTAL ZONES OF THE NORTH-EASTERN SLOPE PLAINS OF THE GREATER CAUCASUS

Abstract. The article analyzes the change in the long-term average annual levels of the Caspian Sea since the beginning of instrumental observations at the Baku post from 1920 to 2020. The reasons for fluctuations in sea level associated with atmospheric processes over the catchment area of the sea are con­sidered. Based on historical data and materials of instrumental observations, as well as taking into account climatic factors, in connection with long-term changes in the level, a forecast was made that the lowering of the Caspian Sea level will probably last until the middle of the 21st century. At the same time, ecological problems caused by fluctuations in the level of the Caspian Sea in the coastal zones of the plains of the northeastern slope of the Greater Caucasus are being investigated.
