SCIENTIFIC INTERPRETATION OF HISTORICAL-GEOGRAPHIC MAPS OF THE CASPIAN SEA IN THE WORKS OF A SCIENTIST-MAPPOINTER SHIRBEK ALIYEV
Sh.K.Azizov
Abstract. The article is dedicated to the work of the scientist-cartographer Shirbek Aliyev (1907-1975), who in 1935 graduated from the Moscow boundary (later geodesic) institute and received a cartographic and geodesic education. In 1946, he began working in the cartography department of the Institute of Geography of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, where he chosed as a scientific theme the change in the level of the Caspian Sea based on historical and geographical maps of different times.
For specialists on historical maps of the Caspian Sea and changes in its level, the scientific work of Sh. Aliyev remained little known. The publication of part of the materials in a monograph in the Azerbaijani language in 1973 led to the fact that this book was not available to most Caspian researchers abroad. In order to better present to the public the scientific works of Sh.D.Aliyev on the Caspian Sea, the article gives a brief description of his scientific work and his contribution to the development of science as a scientist-cartographer.
Keywords: maps of the Caspian Sea, historical and geographical maps, cartographic method of research, sea level fluctuations, transgression, regression.
