MAIN DIRECTIONS AND DEVELOPMENT PROBLEMS OF AGRICULTURE IN THE PLAIN REGIONS OF AZERBAIJAN

Annotation. The study and development of agriculture are particularly relevant in terms of the efficient organization and management of economic systems. This article examines the Central Aran economic region, which includes the districts of Agdash, Goy-chay, Kurdamir, Ujar, Yevlakh, Zardab, and the city of Mingachevir, known for their significant agricultural activities. The region, characterized by a semi-desert and dry steppe climate, covers a total area of 6.69 thousand km² and has a population of 716.2 thousand people. The aim of the research is to identify the main trends and problems in agriculture in the Central Aran economic region by analyzing primary data obtained from surveys and interviews with local farmers, as well as statistical reports and literature. The results show that despite the extensive use of land for agriculture, there has been a 4.6% decrease in cultivated areas over the past five years. The region’s agricultural land is primarily used for the cultivation of cereals and legumes (75%). Another significant agricultural product in the area is pomegranate, accounting for 43% of the country’s pomegranate production. The study identifies existing problems and suggests sustainable development directions to enhance agricultural productivity and sustainability in the region.
