Debris indicators, weathering indices, and palynomorph assemblages in a study of Early to Middle Miocene environmental conditions along the Islamdagh section in East Azerbaijan revealed early Miocene arid conditions, reduced weathering rates, and poorly oxygenated deep water basin sediments with above-average oceanic salinities. (above 40 o\/oo). In the middle of the Early Miocene, a transition to humid conditions and oxygenation of the water column was observed. Further long-term aridification into the flesh until the Middle Miocene occurred in a lacustrine or shelf environment of a less saline (30-18 o\/oo) and more oxygenated water basin, which made these marine deposits excellent source rocks compared to time-equivalent terrestrial deposits.
