Annotation<\/strong>. Short-sighted economic activity in the overwhelming majority of cases, without taking into account the interconnection of natural components, leads to an increase in desertification processes, in particular in Azerbaijan. Today, erosion processes are occurring on 3,610 million hectares of land in the Republic, and over 1 million hectares are subject to desertification.\u00a0Natural and anthropogenic factors affecting the development of the desertification process on the Mugan Plain have been identified in order to ensure the country’s food and environmental security. A compa\u00adrative analysis was carried out with the work of the Russian geographer A.G. Kaufman, who in the first half of the twentieth century studied the lands of the Mugan Plain from the point of view of rational use and protection, increasing soil fertility in order to increase the productivity of agricultural crops. A risk map has been drawn up and areas susceptible to desertification in the study area have been calculated.<\/p>\n
